Fountain Valley, California, is more than just “ A Nice Place to Live. ” With a sprawling urban park and a diverse recreation center, it’s a hub of recreation and summer memories.
One of the most unique spots in the city is The Reptile Zoo, an educational and interactive exhibit home to more than 100 species of reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids, providing daily opportunities for the public to get up close and personal with its residents. With a rich history, interactive features, and opportunities for children, read on to see why we love this Fountain Valley gem.
Founded in 2009, The Reptile Zoo has a history that dates back more than 30 years. Prehistoric Pets, the zoo’s parent company, opened its first pet store in 1988. Known then as Pet Country, it provided both exotic and traditional pets to the public, and as the company grew, its focus shifted to education on exotic reptiles. Jurassic Parties was created in 1995, showcasing exotic reptiles, many of which were not on exhibit at even the largest zoos near Fountain Valley, California. Success has helped to foster expansion, generating what is now the 13,000-square-foot Reptile Zoo.
The facility works to educate visitors on more than 100 species of reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids from all over the world. Many of the animals were born at the zoo, though some are rescues or came from private collections. Through interactive displays and presentations, guests learn each animal’s story, basic facts, handling techniques, and more, providing an increased appreciation for their development and care.
The Reptile Zoo provides a number of interactive opportunities for visitors to Fountain Valley, California. From hands-on presentations with a ball python and a sulcata tortoise to private and group feedings , and even once-in-a-lifetime interactions with some of the zoo’s biggest residents—including an eight-to-twelve foot Burmese Python —the zoo has offered more than 20,000 interactive, educational events over the last 12 years.
The Reptile Zoo also features a junior zookeeper program year-round, in which kids get to experience a day in the life of an animal caretaker, including education, feeding, and animal enrichment. Once they’re done, junior zookeepers share their experiences and take part in a graduation ceremony.
